Doe Lafournais is the old bachelor whose wife died in the seventies. He lives with his sons Randall and Cappy live on the reservation and is the janitor of the Tribal Offices. He is is also often elected as Chairman of the Tribe. In the summer of 1988 he is not the chairman. He has two sister, Josey and Suzette.

 Most of the knowledge about traditional Ojibwe ways and its ceremonies that Randall knows have come down to him from his father. Doe is one of the men who go up to Linden’s house to beat him up and tell him to stay away from the reservation. Joe and Cappy ultimately use Doe’s 30.06 Rifle  to kill Linden.
